Today South Cambie exhibits a harmonious blend of its own past and the near future. The completion of the Canada Line in the summer of 2009, the most recent addition to the city's light rapid transit system, linking Richmond and the airport to downtown, has added an important, convenient transit option for local residents. In turn, this has attracted new residents, higher density housing alternatives and revitalized the local commercial districts.

On its southeast perimeter, South Cambie borders Queen Elizabeth Park, one of Vancouver's largest green spaces, featuring the highest vantage point south of downtown, tennis courts, pitch & putt and frisbee golf courses, ponds, gardens and the Bloedel Floral Conservatory.

Housing
While the area has traditionally been dominated by single family homes, the housing mix in South Cambie has gradually changed to reflect the need for different types of housing. Due to its proximity to downtown, and the recent addition of light rapid transit travel options, the area attracts singles, couples and young families looking for affordable housing close to the city centre. Recent commercial development along Cambie has enabled new condominium and rental accommodations on 2nd, 3rdand 4th floors and zoning has been changed to allow new types of in-fill housing such as duplexes, smaller homes on shared lots and new homes on corner or irregular lots. At present, approximately one-third of the single family homes in the area have some sort of built-in suite.

Location
South Cambie's strategic, central location attracted Vancouver's new City Hall in 1936 and the area has continued to become increasingly desirable as the city spreads further and further out from its core.

Still close to downtown, False Creek and the city's beaches, South Cambie offers a delightful, safe neighbourhood atmosphere and sense of community. With Queen Elizabeth Park, Nat Bailey Stadium, the classic Park Theatre and its many smaller, local parks and amenities, South Cambie keeps its residents busy, even with Vancouver's wide array of outdoor and recreational attractions close at hand.

Shopping
Shopping convenience in South Cambie has changed considerably in recent years. New, larger markets offering a variety of staples and gourmet items have opened in the immediate area and even larger big box supermarkets, electronic and home improvement stores have sprung up just south of the Cambie Bridge on the way into downtown. Still, small cafes, corner stores and small boutiques continue to attract window shoppers and locals in the know.

Transportation
South Cambie is located about 20 minutes from downtown by car or transit, and abundant bike routes are available both for commuting and recreation. New Canada Line SkyTrain stations are located at Cambie and King Edward (West 25th Ave.) and at West Broadway, just north of City Hall.

Recreation
Early morning tai chi or pitch and putt in Queen Elizabeth Park...softball or the fitness circuit in Douglas Park...an evening movie at The Park Theatre or baseball at the legendary Nat Bailey Stadium...here... no shortage of family and fitness activities in South Cambie. And when you've exhausted those possibilities, the rest of Vancouver's spectacular recreational opportunities are just minutes away!
