Arbutus Ridge

Even by Vancouver's standards, Arbutus Ridge is a relatively new neighbourhood with much of its development occurring in the post-WWII housing boom. Land owned by the Quilchena Golf Course was converted to residential property, lending its name to the small yet prosperous enclave of Quilchena. The addition of the Arbutus Village Shopping Centre and housing complex in the 70s helped complete the community picture.

Location
If you have any inkling of nature appreciation, the realization comes quickly that we're spoiled in Vancouver with both the ocean and the mountains to enjoy. And from its heights, Arbutus Ridge presents viewpoints of the ocean, the downtown core and the snowcapped mountains of the North Shore. Views within the neighbourhood are also picturesque, with an eclectic mix of architectural styles, tree-lined streets, well-tended gardens and a number of public parks throughout the area.

Housing
Characteristic of the city as a whole, homes in Arbutus Ridge are an eclectic mix. Period homes on West 37th Avenue, in the English Arts & Crafts style, were designed by architect G.L. Thornton, who was responsible for much of the architectural look and feel of the city in the early part of the 20th Century. In the 1930s, space-efficient residences, known as Vancouver Specials, sprang up to meet growing housing demands. While many examples of the style remain today, Arbutus Ridge also saw an influx of redevelopment and newer generation homes in the post-war era, providing students and customers for the developing community's new schools and shops.

The housing landscape is still predominantly single-detached houses, and recent zoning laws limit new housing developments in the area to non-rental units only.

Shopping
The community is fully serviced by the Arbutus Village Shopping Centre, which offers a supermarket, banking plus specialty and service-oriented shops. Shopping and dining with a more eclectic flavour can be found along 41st Avenue, the southern border Arbutus Ridge shares with Kerrisdale.

Transportation
Located south of the Kitsilano community, Arbutus Ridge's central location between West 16th and West King Edward Avenues provides convenient access to most amenities. There is easy driving and transit access to the downtown and surrounding communities.

Recreation
The corner of 16th Avenue and Arbutus Street features both the Ridge Theatre, a landmark repertory cinema for the city, and a classic bowling alley. The private Arbutus Club offers family-oriented sports, exercise facilities and fine dining. And for a power walk or leisurely stroll, there are eight city parks and three mini-parks in the neighbourhood.
